Position Available: Farmers’ Market Assistant

Farmers Market Assistant Position Description 

Terms: This is a full-time temporary position and will require up to 35hrs/wk. The contract will run from
May 16 to October 10, 2016. Candidate must be available each Wednesday from 12-8pm and Saturdays
from 7am-3pm throughout duration of contract, remaining hours will be flexible. Candidate must be
between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment; have been registered as full-time
students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next
academic year; be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has
been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act2; and, be legally entitled to work in
Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

About Us: The Hillhurst Sunnyside Community Association (HSCA) is a grass-roots organization that
believes the ongoing health and vibrancy of a community is best served by strengthening the capacity of
its residents to have meaningful engagements with each other and the world around them. We support
this through programs and initiatives centered on youth and families, seniors, food and sustaining great
community spaces. HSCA runs several successful social enterprises and prides itself on its diverse
portfolio of programs and services. The Community Food Program operates multiple programs including
the Farmers’ Market, which aim to increase food access, build community and capacity and continue to
push for systems change that will help our community and city flourish.

Tasks and Responsibilities:
• Act as on-site farmers’ market manager including volunteer coordination and working with vendors
and patrons
• Ongoing communication with vendors
• Management of vendor database
• Support market promotion, including through social media
• Plan and coordinate special markets
• Provide administrative support to farmers’ market manager
• Provide support to other community food program areas as needed

• Excellent organizational and time management skills;
• Experience with event planning and coordination;
• Experience working with volunteers and community members in a leadership capacity;
• Demonstrated experience in marketing and promotion, especially through social media;
• Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively;
• Excellent interpersonal skills;
• Commitment to social justice and knowledge of food system issues;
• Demonstrated ability to work within a diverse community (people of different ages, abilities and
cultural backgrounds);
• Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite considered an asset;
• Knowledge of WordPress considered an asset.

Compensation will be between $16-18 per hour, depending on experience. This position is dependent
on funding.
